Setting Better Habits
How to break bad habits
First, in order to set better habits you have to identify and break the bad ones. Try identifying the root cause of why you have the habit in the first place. What triggers the behavior? Is it boredom, stress, or something else? By understanding the root cause, you can better address the underlying issue and break the habit. From there, you will have to find alternative activities to do instead of engaging in the bad habit.
How to set better habits
Start small
Habits take time to form, so it’s important to start with something manageable. Pick one habit that you want to establish and make a plan for how you will integrate it into your daily routine.
Set a specific goal
Instead of saying that you want to eat healthier, set a specific goal, such as eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Having a clear and measurable goal will make it easier to track your progress.
Create an environment for success
Create obvious visual cues in your environment to help draw your attention toward a desired habit. If you want to eat healthier, begin by removing the food from your home that you know you shouldn’t eat and replace them with healthier options. If you want to stop scrolling on social media, delete the app or have a friend change your password. If you want to exercise more, make sure you have your clothes and equipment ready to go the next morning.
Make a plan and use habit stacking
Consider the steps you need to take and make a schedule for when you will do each step. For example, “After I (current habit), I will (new habit).”
Track your progress
Use a journal or a habit-tracking app to keep track of your progress to see how far you’ve come. Keeping track of your progress can be a great motivator.
Find accountability
Having someone to hold you accountable can be a big help when it comes to establishing new habits. Find a friend or family member who will check in on your progress and encourage you along the way.
Be patient and persistent
Habits take time to form, so it’s important to just keep going. Don’t get discouraged if you slip up, just get back on track and stay disciplined.
Use these tips to help identify the habits that no longer serve you, and begin to set better ones in place of them. Changing your habits is a great place to start when beginning your health journey.
